Antigen-presenting cells (APCs, such macrophages and dendritic cells) are capable of phagocytosing pathogens and processing them into antigens that are then presented on their cell surface with MHC class II molecules. They can then activate cells of the adaptive immune response such as immature CD4 (helper) or CD8 (cytotoxic) T cells.
